Daily Devotions from Genesis 17

Here's a 5-day Bible reading plan and devotional guide based on the our study in Genesis 17.

Day 1: The God of Covenant Reading: Genesis 17:1-8

Devotional: Today we focus on God's covenant with Abraham. This passage reveals God as El Shaddai - the Almighty God who makes and keeps His promises. As you read, reflect on God's faithfulness in your own life. How has He proven Himself mighty and trustworthy? Just as God promised to bless Abraham and make him a father of many nations, He has plans to bless you and use you for His purposes. Take time to thank God for His covenant love and ask Him to reveal more of His character to you. Consider how you can walk more closely with Him, as He instructed Abraham to "walk before me faithfully and be blameless."

Day 2: A New Identity in Christ Reading: 2 Corinthians 5:17-21

Devotional: God gave Abram a new name - Abraham - signifying his new identity and purpose. Similarly, when we come to Christ, we receive a new identity as God's children. Today's passage reminds us that in Christ, we are new creations. The old has gone, the new has come! Reflect on how your identity has changed since knowing Jesus. What old patterns or beliefs do you need to let go of? How can you more fully embrace your new identity in Christ? Ask God to help you see yourself as He sees you - forgiven, loved, and purposed for His glory. Consider writing down aspects of your new identity in Christ as a reminder of who you truly are.

Day 3: Walking in the Spirit Reading: Galatians 5:16-25

Devotional: The covenant of circumcision symbolized cutting away the flesh to live by the Spirit. As New Testament believers, we're called to a spiritual circumcision of the heart. Today's passage contrasts the works of the flesh with the fruit of the Spirit. As you read, ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any areas where you're still walking according to the flesh. Confess these to God and ask for His help to walk by the Spirit instead. Focus on one fruit of the Spirit you'd like to cultivate more in your life. How can you cooperate with God's Spirit to grow in this area today? Remember, this is not about striving in your own strength, but yielding to the Spirit's work in you.

Day 4: God of the Impossible Reading: Luke 1:26-38

Devotional: Abraham and Sarah laughed at the idea of having a child in their old age, yet God did the impossible. In today's reading, we see another miraculous birth foretold - that of Jesus. Mary's response, "I am the Lord's servant," shows great faith in the face of the seemingly impossible. What situations in your life seem impossible right now? How might God be inviting you to trust Him more deeply? Spend time in prayer, surrendering your "impossible" situations to God. Ask Him to increase your faith and help you see things from His perspective. Remember, nothing is impossible with God!

Day 5: Costly Discipleship Reading: Luke 9:23-26

Devotional: Abraham's immediate obedience in circumcising his household, despite the pain and vulnerability involved, demonstrates the cost of following God. Jesus echoes this theme in today's passage, calling us to deny ourselves and take up our cross daily. Following Jesus isn't always easy or comfortable, but it's always worth it. Reflect on areas where God might be calling you to deeper obedience or sacrifice. What might it look like to "take up your cross" in your current circumstances? Ask God for the courage and strength to follow Him wholeheartedly, no matter the cost. Remember that any earthly sacrifice pales in comparison to the eternal reward of knowing and serving Christ.
