Joseph's journey takes him from being a favored son to a slave in Egypt, yet even in this lowly position, we see that "the LORD was with Joseph, and he was a successful man" (Genesis 39:2). This challenges our typical notions of success. Joseph owned no luxury items and had no prestigious title, yet God declared him successful. Why? As believers, we're called to bloom wherever we're planted. Joseph didn't waste time complaining about his circumstances or daydreaming about a better future. Instead, he poured himself into his work, doing everything "heartily, as to the Lord and not to men" (Colossians 3:23). His integrity and diligence were so evident that even his pagan master recognized God's hand upon him.
This raises a convicting question: Do our lives demonstrate such clear evidence of God's presence that even non-believers can see it? Companies and organizations should be clamoring to hire Christians, knowing they'll be getting hardworking, honest employees. If this isn't the case, we need to examine whether we're truly living out our faith in every aspect of life.
But Joseph's commitment to God was tested beyond just his work ethic. When faced with intense sexual temptation from his master's wife, Joseph's response reveals the depth of his devotion. He doesn't merely resist once, but day after day he refuses her advances, eventually having to physically flee the situation.
Joseph's victory over temptation offers several key insights:
1. He recognized the true nature of sin, calling it a "great wickedness" against God (Genesis 39:9). In our modern culture that often glamorizes sexual immorality, we need this reminder of how seriously God views sin.
2. He avoided compromising situations. Joseph wouldn't even be alone with this woman, recognizing the danger of putting himself in temptation's path.
3. He was willing to suffer consequences for doing right. When falsely accused, Joseph didn't compromise his integrity to save his own skin.
4. He fled temptation. Sometimes the best strategy is simply to run away from the source of temptation, as Paul admonishes: "Flee youthful lusts" (2 Timothy 2:22).
Joseph's example shatters excuses we might make about being unable to resist temptation. If a young, single man in the prime of life could maintain sexual purity in the face of persistent temptation, we too can overcome by God's grace.
Yet Joseph's story doesn't end with a neat, happy resolution after he does the right thing. Instead, his integrity lands him in prison, falsely accused of the very sin he refused to commit. This is perhaps the hardest test of all – suffering for doing good.
How easy it would have been for Joseph to become bitter, to question God's fairness or love. But even in this unjust imprisonment, we see that "the LORD was with Joseph and showed him mercy" (Genesis 39:21). Joseph's response to this trial reveals several profound truths:
1. God's presence is more valuable than our preferred circumstances. Joseph had God with him in prison, which was better than being in a palace without God.

4. Doing right doesn't always lead to immediate rewards, but it's always the right choice. We obey God because He is holy, not because of what we might get out of it.
The thread running through every phase of Joseph's life is summed up beautifully in 1 Corinthians 10:31 – "Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." This is the heartbeat of true godliness: a life wholly devoted to honoring God in every circumstance.
